Leaflet from Paddy Gallagher -Sinn Fein The Workers’ Party- 1981 General Election -Waterford June 13, 2012

From the 1981 General Election a leaflet from Sinn Fein The Workers’ Party candidate Paddy Gallagher who was running in Waterford. Gallagher, who had been elected to Waterford Corporation in 1974, polled 3,463 votes in this 1981 General Election and failed to win a seat. The drop in vote from 1977 could be in part explained by the presence of H-Block candidate Kevin Lynch on the ballot paper.
Gallagher was elected to the Dail in February 1982 , however he lost his seat in the November 1982 General Election.

Renee Prendergast -Official Sinn Fein -1975 Galway By-Election November 3, 2010

These few clippings are from the 1975 Galway West By Election caused by the death of Fianna Fail TD John Geoghegan and won by his daughter Maire Geoghegan Quinn.
They give an illustration of OSF policy and thinking at the time . Considering it was 1975 the quote of “Our minerals, oil and gas which successive governments have sold out must be taken back by the Irish people” still holds fairly true.
Renee Prendergast polled 656 votes.
Clippings from The Galway Advertiser.

Jimmy Brick, Tony Coffey,Billy Dillon -Sinn Fein The Workers Party -1979 Local Elections Galway October 14, 2010

Was sent this flyer from the 1979 Local Elections campaign in Galway. Jimmy Brick, Tony Coffey and Billy Dillon of Sinn Fein The Workers Party.
Jimmy Brick was a long time stalwart of the Workers Party who stood in five General Elections in Galway West and also in two European Elections. Brick left in 1990 in part over the fuss created by Eamon Smullens ‘Necessity of Social Democracy’ pamphlet. Others to leave at the time included Eoghan Harris and John Cadden.

Tony Coffey stood in the 1977 General Election and later in the 1979 European Elections. In 1981 he stood as an Independent.A former Bus driver ,he also had a spell as leader of the Galway Council of Trade Unions.

Elect a Worker -Its All a Question of class.
None of the three were elected.
Billy Dillon polled 247 votes ,Jimmy Brick polled 151 votes ,Tony Coffey polled 306 votes for the City Council and 872 votes in the County Council elections.

‘Fight your corner -Dont Emigrate’ -Sinn Fein / Republican Clubs posters from the 1970s March 29, 2010

From the 1970s a selection of images of  Republican Clubs and Sinn Fein posters kindly sent to me by a donor.
An Anti EEC poster presumably from the 1973 Referendum (with the Slogan Fight your corner – Don’t Emigrate), a poster criticising The Cosgrave Government , a Republican Clubs poster and one also for the Freeing of all Political Prisoners.
This version of Sinn Fein / Republican Clubs was the precursor of Sinn Fein The Workers Party which became The Workers Party although I’m not 100% sure they all are.

Tomás MacGiolla -’Dublin People’ -Workers Party Paper- 1994 European Elections. February 4, 2010

The Late Tomás MacGiolla from the 1994 European Elections. Although not winning a seat, he polled respectably.
This is a freesheet given out during the campaign. It highlights The Workers Party policy on the EU.  From the paper you can see how proud Tomás MacGiolla was to have been Lord Mayor of Dublin . The issues of the day both European and domestic are shown too. The real isssue though was jobs….
